Where to Park in Hakuba - Feature Image

Hiring a rental car in Hakuba during the winter season gives you the flexibility to explore, but freedom comes with a caveat: parking.

Knowing where to park in Hakuba — and when — can mean the difference between first tracks and a long, uphill trudge in ski boots.

This guide is written specifically for winter guests driving in Hakuba, with local insights into Goryu, Hakuba 47, Happo One, Iwatake, Tsugaike, Norikura, and Cortina.

As long-time locals who live and ski here, this guide offers practical, firsthand knowledge to help you navigate Hakuba’s resorts with confidence and efficiency.

While descriptions are helpful, nothing is quite as useful as a Google Map.  Not to fear, we have a custom map made just for you at the bottom of the article.

Before You Park: 5 Things You Should Know

Where to Park in Hakuba - Properly equipped with snow tires

Most parking across Hakuba’s resorts is free, but there are two exceptions:

  • Happo-One Gondola Area: Small private lots near the Adam Gondola — paid and very limited.
  • Tsugaike Gondola Base: Free on weekdays, paid on weekends and national holidays.

Timing matters — especially on weekends and powder days. Aim to arrive between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. to secure a convenient space.

Know your destination before you leave; signage around some resort areas is sparse or unclear. And finally, prepare your vehicle like a local:

  • If snow is in the forecast — even midday — raise your windshield wipers to prevent freezing.
  • Keep a scraper in your car.
  • Ensure your rental vehicle is equipped with proper winter tires and snow-clearing tools.

The most sought-after spot is the Escal Plaza parking area, at the base of the gondola. It offers immediate lift access but fills quickly on weekends. Arriving by 8:00 a.m. is essential.

If the main lot is full, Lot 4 — located downhill — becomes the fallback. Although still free, it requires either a shuttle ride or a 10 to 15–minute uphill walk.

Where to Park at Hakuba 47

Hakuba 47 offers one of the more efficient parking setups in the valley. The second lot past the gondola is your best option:

  • It’s level and a short walk to the lift
  • Free to park
  • Arrive before 8:30 a.m. for optimal access

Where to Park at Happo-One

The Nakiyama parking area is the largest at Happo-One and offers direct access to the slopes. On busy days, it reaches capacity quickly — arrive by 7:30 a.m. to secure a space.

For guests with lessons at Evergreen International Ski School, parking near the Kokusai Lift is ideal, though availability is limited. This area requires an early arrival, before lifts start spinning.

While several small private lots exist near the Adam Gondola, they are paid and usually quite busy.

Where to Park at Iwatake

Iwatake’s gondola base parking is straightforward but comes with a caveat. While it is free and located directly in front of the lift, it becomes highly congested on weekends. There are limited overflow options or shuttle systems here, so early arrival is the only way to guarantee proximity.

Where to Park at Tsugaike

The main gondola lot is large and directly adjacent to the base station:

  • Free on weekdays, paid on weekends and holidays
  • Fills quickly on powder days
  • Arrive before 8:00 a.m.

A secondary lot is located higher up, along the slope past the gondola. While closer to some lift points, it fills even faster. Both lots can be chaotic on mornings with fresh snow.

Where to Park at Norikura

Norikura does not have a formal parking lot. Visitors park diagonally along the roadside near the base area. A lift ticket office is at the bottom of the Alps, No. 1 Pair Lift. From the road, you can ski down, collect your pass, take the lift up, and traverse across the rest of the resort. It’s an informal setup — arrive early for the best spot.

Where to Park at Cortina

Cortina’s main parking lot sits just below the resort base and is one of the better-managed options in Hakuba. A portion of the area is reserved exclusively for hotel guests. Resort staff will direct all arriving vehicles upon entry.

  • Free to park
  • Arrive before 8:00 a.m. on weekends and powder days
  • Staff will assign appropriate parking areas
