A day on the slopes. An evening with sumo. This January, add a Japanese cultural experience to your Hakuba ski holiday.
The Sumo Show HIRAKUZA in HAKUBA comes to Wing 21 from 16–22 January 2027. With live demonstrations and English commentary, it is an accessible introduction to sumo for visitors who have never watched it before.

What to expect at the show
Discover sumo’s rituals and training, learn its rules and techniques, then watch the wrestlers in action. The programme also includes a photo opportunity with the performers.
Want to take part? The optional Sumo Challenge costs an extra ¥3,300 including tax. Tickets are sold at the venue on the day, with just five places per show, on a first-come basis.
HIRAKUZA’s 2026 appearances at Adelaide Fringe and Edinburgh Festival Fringe attracted more than 17,000 visitors across 58 performances. Its Hakuba visit offers a chance to enjoy the entertainment without adding another city to your trip.
Make an evening of it in Hakuba
Spend the day skiing or snowboarding, return to your chalet to change, then head out for the show. The early evening timing leaves room to plan dinner afterwards. Allow extra travel time when roads are snowy.
Staying with Hakuba White Fox? Ask our team for help planning your evening and getting to the venue. It’s super close, just a 7 min drive with easy parking. Rent a car and skip the troubling of getting a taxi -> www.hakubacarrental.com
Miss the Hakuba dates? See sumo in Tokyo or Osaka
If your stay falls outside the Hakuba performances, HIRAKUZA has permanent venues in Tokyo and Osaka. Add a sumo show before or after your mountain holiday, checking each venue’s calendar for your dates.
Tokyo: HIRAKUZA in Ginza
THE SUMO LIVE RESTAURANT HIRAKUZA GINZA TOKYO pairs an English-language sumo show with Japanese dining. It is an option for an evening during a Tokyo stopover.
Osaka: HIRAKUZA in Namba
THE SUMO HALL HIRAKUZA OSAKA offers sumo entertainment at its permanent Namba venue. See the official website for show dates, programmes and ticket options.
Tokyo Grand Sumo Tournament: 10–24 January 2027
For professional tournament sumo, visit Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo from 10–24 January 2027. If your Tokyo dates overlap, you could combine the January tournament with your Hakuba ski holiday. This is competitive professional sumo; HIRAKUZA offers entertainment shows.
Advance ticket sales begin on 5 December 2026. Check the official Grand Sumo ticket website for availability.
Tokyo tournament seating tip: Choose stadium-style chair seats if comfort is a priority. Traditional box seats put you closer to the action, but involve sitting on floor cushions without backrests, which can become uncomfortable over several hours. Chair seats are generally cheaper, too.
Plan your Hakuba winter stay
Bring your family or friends together for a holiday that goes beyond the slopes. Explore our Hakuba chalets and holiday homes to find a place for your group.
